| "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!" Acts 19:28. With this shout, angry
citizens of Ephesus pursued and nearly killed Paul's assistants
during his second visit to that city. (Great people of the Bible and how
they lived, p. 402).
Artemis was the goddess of hunting, wild animals and the moon. In addition
she displayed many characteristics of the ancient mother-goddess and fertility
rites. Her many-breasted appearance represented fertility and fruitfulness. |
