Applied Theology

The department of Applied Theology at BGST focuses on the everyday dimensions of life andlearning. It believes that lay theological training needs to integrate biblical scholarship with the texture of everyday living. The sub-disciplines within the department of Applied Theology embrace the inner life of the believer, the work arena, the church context, lifelong learning and being wounded healers. Theories and practices from other disciplines such as philosophy, psychology and sociology are drawn upon and critically interfaced with biblical truths. (Download department information)

Biblical Studies

The Old Testament merits study both in its own right, and as essential background for understanding the New Testament. All our Old Testament courses aim to give students a better understanding of the Old Testament and the world in which it originated. We offer both general surveys of the entire Old Testament and detailed studies of specific books and topics. In addition, we want our students to see Old and New Testaments as forming an organic whole in which God’s plan of salvation is set out in its entirety. In other words, we take the Old Testament seriously as part of Christian Scripture. Finally, we believe that the Old Testament addresses issues of vital concern for Christians today, and hope that through our courses students will be better able to apply the Old Testament to their own lives and circumstances. The emphasis is on building a biblical/theological philosophy of education to guide the ministry of making and educating disciples of Jesus Christ. (Download department information)

Missions and Evangelism

Just as Evangelism is very much part of a Christian’s walk with God, so Missions is integral to most studies in BGST. It is unreal to compartmentalise Missions and Evangelism and study it exclusive of the whole council of God. Having said that, it must be admitted that certain aspects of the subject area are best treated in a focused manner, hence this department of studies called Missions and Evangelism. Theological and Historical

It may be said that a good deal of the present malaise in the church and in Christian thinking today is due to the failure to give the study of Christian doctrine or simply “theology” its proper place in the training of Christian leaders. Theology has undergone a tortuous development; with each theological worldview subjected to much debate within the history of the Christian Church. Such debates were fuelled by the highly individualistic and assertive positions taken by theologians. We hope to unravel the development of Christian thinking in the history of the Christian Church and eventually to convey to our students a clear understanding of the Christian Faith.
